Volunteer Opportunity - Directors

We welcome nominations from our members to become Directors of Soundart Radio

We are looking for four or more new members of the board to join in our twentieth year of operations.

Long standing members of the Board are stepping down after committed service to the station, giving the opportunity for us to form a new group of interested people to lead the station in collaboration with staff and members.

You could be a listener, supporter, programme maker, an artist, fundraiser, or a community organiser. You could be local or living further afield. Please read on and if you would like to put yourself forward, send your personal statement to us by 5pm on Friday 28th November 2025. Details at the bottom of the page.

Do you love and celebrate Soundart Radio?

Could you be an ambassador and champion for our community radio station?

Do you have enough time to give in support of our station?

Have you got ideas to share and have a curiosity to be more involved?

Do you have relevant knowledge, skill or experience to offer?

If you answered yes to the above questions - we would love to hear from you!

Soundart Radio is at a key time of transformation, as we are re-forming our identity, developing a financial fundraising strategy, and assessing our scale of operations and governance structures to best serve and uphold our work in the community in which we serve.

With the fantastic space we rent at Dartington, offering us a comfortable high quality broadcast studio as well as limitless opportunities for events, community and learning activities, we want to involve our members in creating meaningful projects and partnerships in 2026 and beyond.

Joining the Board is more than paperwork and meetings - it is a chance to influence and form a lasting movement in media and art for Totnes, Dartington and beyond.

How to nominate yourself

You can apply in the way that works best for you either

  • A personal statement in a letter or email (no more than 250 words)

  • A video or sound recording (no more than 2 minutes)

In your statement please tell us why you want to join the Soundart Radio Board including what attracts you to our organisation and its activities and values, and what skills, perspectives and experiences you bring.

Deadline: Friday 28th November by 5pm

Email: sarah@soundartradio.org.uk

If you’d like an informal chat before submitting your personal statement, feel free to email Sarah or speak to a member of the staff team.

Please attend our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 30th November at 3-6pm where we will formally vote in new Directors and you will have an opportunity to meet staff, members and Directors.

A diverse and exciting membership

We want to invite members to consider themselves for being a part of the Board - you do not require any past experience on a company or charity board. The only prerequisite to becoming a Director is that you be a Member of Soundart Radio. Directors are asked to complete a DBS check as part of the role.

You do not need certain qualifications or skills to become a Director.  We promote inclusion, access, and understanding between people from different backgrounds and cultures. What is most important is that your values align with Soundart Radio’s and you have the energy and commitment to join us on this journey of creativity and collaboration.

If you are skilled and experienced in the areas of financial or secretarial duties, or as a chairperson, please make these known in your personal statement as these key Board roles could become vacant in 2026.

Soundart Radio values…
  • Our membership, local community and global listenership.

  • The science, politics, culture and the art of radio.

  • Community-owned organisations and the role of radio art and broadcast media in support of it.

  • Radio as a medium for art, journalism and self-expression.

  • Inclusivity and allowing everyone to have a voice, take creative risks and learn by doing.

Directors bring….
  • Ideas and energy to fundraise for the station through bid writing, events and campaigns

  • Storytelling and communication skills to tell people about Soundart Radio, what we do and why

  • Knowledge and experience of engaging people, developing memberships and movement-building

  • Ideas for reaching new people, bringing different people together, forming partnerships and collaborations

  • Connections to local or international radio stations, media organisations, festivals, and arts companies.

As Directors of the Company…
  • We meet regularly throughout the year. In 2025 we met monthly, alternating between online and in-person, meetings lasting 1-2 hours, currently on weekday evenings, but we are open to discussing the duration and dates of the meetings in 2026.

  • We prepare in advance for meetings. Board papers are circulated at least one week prior to the meeting, approximately 3-10 pages, including minutes of the previous meeting showing any actions which were agreed to be carried out, along with any financial reports, policies and other documents. We can organise for these to be adapted and provided in alternative formats or give further support to make the information easier to digest upon request.

  • We help run the company with legal responsibilities to promote the success of the company: "to deliver an arts-based local radio station service and create opportunities for practicing artists, musicians, writing and engaged consumers to experiment with the medium of radio as a means of creative expression.”

  • We bring and contribute new ideas, questions and we influence activities of the organisation ensuring our work is relevant and responding to our community and its needs.

  • We are volunteers. The role of Director is a voluntary role and no payment or reimbursement is offered. Travel subsidies may be made available as relevant.

Soundart Radio is a Not-For-Profit Company Limited By Guarantee therefore all Directors have legal responsibilities under company law - we’ll make sure you understand these and provide any training you need.
